Association Officers and Executive Committee Members

All officers and executive committee members of the Sheffield Occupational Health and Safety Association (SOHSA) are volunteers and give their time to coordinate the association, manage membership and organise its' various events and meetings. This page provides information about the current Association Officers and Executive Commitee.

Association Officers

Chris Jerman Chris Jerman

As Safety Manager for John Lewis plc, Chris is responsible for the implementation of the safety management system across the entire JL estate including a large number of retail premises, logistics operations, manufacturing sites and leisure locations. His no-nonsense approach to Safety and over 20 years of experience make him ideally suited to the committee. Chris has provided members with a range of useful talks in the name of sharing best practice.

Tracey Stubbs Tracey Stubbs
Hon. Secretary

Tracey currently works for AW Safety Management as a consultant providing health and safety services to a variety of clients.  Previously Tracey has worked as an office manager in an Occupational Health Department of the NHS for over 14 years, and then 12 years as the health and safety officer for  East Midlands Chamber, where her main role was working for the training department  ensuring learners were in a safe working environment, as well as managing the health and safety for the Chamber. Tracey has been on the SOHSA Executive Committee since April 2007 and the Hon. Secretary since 2008.

Phil became closely involved with SOHSA working as Health and Safety Manager at the British Glass Manufacturers’ Confederation - exchanging information and networking to share issues and good practices. He was co-opted to the Executive Committee in 2006 in order build the association’s website and has since been voted a full member of the committee. Phil has since changed roles, now developing business for Glass Technology Services Ltd (GTS), an independent research and testing facility for glass.

Mick Blunt Mick Blunt

Mick Blunt has a long history working in a range of industries and worked closely with Frank Smith during his career. Following his time with Frank Smith, he pursued a career in Health & Safety taking onboard the concept that the key to successful Health & Safety really is communicating the message - a key objective of SOHSA itself.

Mike Denison

Mike Denison

Mike Denison currently works at the EEF, The Manufacturer’s Organisation, where he has spent the last eight years, currently holding the role of Health, Safety and Sustainability Lead. Prior to this Mike gained extensive experience in manufacturing, construction, utilities, property and facilities management over an ten year period. Mike has worked in-company as well as in consultancy roles. Mike is experienced at implementing, running and auditing management systems to BS EN ISO:9001, BS EN ISO:14001 and BS OHSAS:18001. This has now led to Mike being involved with the British Standards Institute on the committee that is working on the development of ISO:45001, the ISO replacement for BS OHSAS:18001.

Ian McKay Ian McKay

Ian is Health and Safety Manager for Telefónica UK Ltd and responsible for over 350 high street shops, four call centres and other corporate offices. His role includes retail, driver risk mamangement, DSE, training and maintaining OHSAS 18001 accreditation. Previously working in mining, local government and housing associations he believes in a ‘can do’ approach to safety and enjoys working within all levels of organisations.

  Declan Moore

 Matt Steventon Matt Steventon Matt is Health and Safety Manager for South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) with responsibility for over 6000 properties and a large portfolio of care homes and supported housing schemes. He believes that health and safety is a core management function, the hallmark of a well-run business, and loathes the use of ‘health and safety’ as an excuse to deliver poor services or restrict the freedoms of others. Matt promotes a brand of health and safety based on proportionality, practicality and the management of ‘real’ risks enabling peoples to work and live safely.
Jerry Smith CMIOSH Jerry Smith CMIOSH

Jerry is a professional health and safety consultant with management experience. He has over 25 years experience of the management of health and safety, at varying levels; including 9 years’ experience as a regional health and safety advisor for a National PLC motor dealer franchise group.
Currently the Senior Health and Safety Consultant with HS Direct Ltd, Jerry's remit involves managing in-house and field based health and safety consultants, as well as support staff; assisting clients with the management of their bespoke health and safety software management system; accident investigation; CDM management; auditing; training; and development of health and safety systems and processes.

Ben Tranmer Ben Tranmer
Immediate Past Chairman

Ben is Health, Safety and Environment Manager at ALcontrol Laboratories in Rotherham. With a degree in Environmental Studies he began his working life at ALcontrol in 1998 in the environmental monitoring division working up chimney stacks. Obtaining an NEBOSH General Certificate Ben was progressively promoted to group H&S Coordinator and SHE Officer roles. Recently achieving a Diploma in Environmental Management, Ben has qualified for IIRSM specialist membership and has been instrumental in implementing and maintaining ISO:14001 across ALcontrol. Ben’s expertise lay in Working at Heights, COSHH, Legionella Management, Compressed Gases, Manual Handling and Environmental Management. Ben joined SOHSA in 2006 and was elected onto the committee in 2011.

Mark Wait Mark Wait
Past Chairman

Having worked in the engineering industry (specifically forging, machining and foundry industries) for 30 years, Mark naturally progressed into Health and Safety 10 years ago with the help of past chairman John Pearce and vice chairman, Tim Hedland. Mark is now the Group Health and Safety Manager at Special Steel Co Ltd in Sheffield. Mark enjoys playing the saxophone in a local band and is a keen ice hockey fan. He is as passionate for his team (the Sheffield Steelers) as he is about Health and Safety.
