Annual Sheffield Occupational
Health and Safety Association Conference 2010

altThe 2010 Annual Sheffield Occupational Health and Safety Association Conference is to be held on Tuesday, 12 October 2010, at Tapton Hall in Sheffield. This year focusing on the importance of company culture, strong leadership and behaviour on health and safety under the theme “Winning Hearts and Minds”.

Please visit www.sohsa.org.uk/conference to download the conference flyer and booking form.

Gillian Spurrier, Head of Operations for Yorkshire and the Humber at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), will open the conference with a keynote speech discussing the importance of leadership from the top-down in all organisations, highlighting developments in directors duties and the guidance developed by both HSE and the Institute of Directors to help directors lead in health and safety.

The conference will look into two different fatality incidents, the first occurring locally, to investigate the impact such a incident has had on the company since and highlighted the changes that needed to be made in the culture of all involved - “What can go wrong - Lessons Learnt” - and the second, personal testimony, “It will never happen to me!” from Jen Deeney who experienced first-hand the the personal impact such an incident has on the victim's family following the unfortunate, and preventable, death of her newly-wed construction worker husband.

Corporate culture and psychology experts Dr Carolyn Yeoman and Kate Blackford, Highley Yeoman Consulting Ltd, will then take delegates deeper into the topic of behavioural based safety (BBS), safety culture evolution and identifying the root causes and triggers for unsafe behaviours – in the feature session “An Evolution in Safety Culture” - involving delegates in activities to bring-home the messages and important factors to bear in mind when trying to achieve a shift in safety culture in any size of organisation.

Finally, and following the fatality case-studies already discussed, legal experts Zoe Betts and Kevin Bridges, Pinsent Masons LLP, will discuss corporate manslaughter with the session “Corporate Manslaughter and you” - explaining developments in this area as the first case under the new law reaches trial.

An event not to be missed, tickets are available to members of the Sheffield Occupational Health and Safety Association (SOHSA) for £50 and to non-members for only £90. A limited number of exhibition opportunities are also available for suitable providers of health and safety products and services.
