Please see below the RoSPA press release - celebrating the achievements of Andy Chappell the past Secretary of the Birmingham Health Safety &
Environment Association.

"Staffordshire professional officially recognised for services to health and safety

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has honoured a Staffordshire professional who has made a substantial contribution to the improvement of health and safety at national, sector and local levels for more than 30 years.

Andy Chappell, who has served as secretary of the Birmingham Health, Safety and Environment Association (BHSEA) for the last 16 years, has been recognised with the safety charity’s Distinguished Service Award.

RoSPA Distinguished Service Awards are reserved for individuals who make exceptional contributions to society through their work in health and safety.

Mr Chappell, of Rugeley, has worked tirelessly to increase knowledge and awareness of health and safety, particularly among small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) in the construction sector, in which he has contributed to the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) Working Well Together campaign (WWT) since its creation in 2000.

As the driving force behind the BHSEA, which now has 330 members drawn from a wide range of industries such as engineering, construction, retail and finance, Mr Chappell has helped improve standards of health and safety and the working environment across all industries in the West Midlands.

Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA chief executive, said: “RoSPA Distinguished Service Awards reflect those individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of safety, health and well-being in the workplace.

“Andy Chappell has worked tirelessly to increase knowledge and awareness of health and safety and is the driving force behind the BHSEA. His dedication to his work and infectious enthusiasm has earned him the trust and respect of numerous organisations in the health and safety community.”

On receiving the award, Mr Chappell said: “This award was totally unexpected but it was especially meaningful to know that it came from RoSPA. I must say, though, that I couldn't have achieved anything at all without the invaluable support of my wife Liz, who has been assistant secretary at the BHSEA throughout the past 16 years. And the same must be said of the superb support that we received from a long list of honorary officers, council and committee members of the BHSEA who volunteer their time so willingly, while also doing their day job.”

Andy Chappell received his Distinguished Service Award during the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards in Birmingham on Tuesday. He is one of four RoSPA Distinguished Service Award recipients this year."
