I have a number of air conditioning units and my employer will not have them serviced.

Is there any legal compliance that I could use to ensure these units get serviced and to change his mind?

Yes! The EU F-Gas regulations stipulate that all systems containing over 3kg of F-Gas refrigerant must be checked for damage and leaks at least once per year by an F-Gas certified contractor and information recorded in an F-Gas Logbook. This inspection is quite thorough and from my experience is tied in with servicing, so it makes sense to have both done together. I should just add that if the total capacity of your AC systems is greater than 12kW then under the Energy Performance of Building (EPBD) Regulations 2010 you should also have the system inspected for performance every 5 years. This has to be done by an accredited inspector who will assess the efficiency of the system and make recommendations for improvements. As for Legionella in regular AC, there isn't any water in the system so it shouldn't be an issue. An exception to the rule is if you have issues with condensation building up in reservoirs where growth could occur. If you have then this further supports the argument for regular servicing and maintenance. If you need more advice about F-Gas etc then please message me. Thanks, Ben
