Hi everyone
We have a number of CNC Turning machines on site that use multi tool turrets, an accident occurred where an operator cut his thumb on a tool that was not being used during the manufacture of the product but had been left in the turret. I suggested that all tooling that is not being used to produce the particular part should be protected. Can anyone that use these types of multi tool turrets give me feedback to what their company does with tooling that is not in use so that I can advise our company what the industry best practice is?
Kind regards
Sean

We have around 20 CNC lathes with multi tool turrets and came to the decision that protecting the non working tools was not reasonable taking into consideration the time that it would take and the minor level of accident that could occur. Also whn in operation the turrets switch tools regularly so all would have to be un guarded when turning parts. All out CNCs have totally enclosed guards. We did however guard the tools on our biggest lathes (3 off)where the tools were larger and the possible severity of accident greater. These lathes were also not fully enclosed.

Hi Mr Taylor
Thank you for the information you have provided about how your company handles this issue, based on your reply I have decided to speak to all operators of these machines and inform them of the potential hazards associated with using multi tool turrets.
