Presently we provide health surveillance checks for all our employees using EEF Occupational Health which was previously run by Outokumpu. Since the change of ownership we have noted that the recall periods have fallen significantly.
Having read guidance on the HSE website in relation to hand arm vibration it says that it is good practice that anyone who is exposed but shows no symptoms should be examined every 3 years but EEF are recalling them every year. Can anyone confirm what the position is?
Also, in relation to hearing recalls, EEF say that any new employees need audio tests every year for the first 3 years of employment, even if their hearing is fine. When it was run by Outokumpu it was every 3 years. Does anyone know what is good practice for audio recalls?
Finally, can anyone recommend any other occupational health providers.
Thanks.

Sorry unable to help you with the recall periods but on the provider bit you could try the NHS Plus website ie: www.nhsplus.nhs.uk. This has a list of NHS Occ health departments that sell their services to private companies. I think the Northern General used to be part of this.

Hope this is of help.

We had a lady give a presentation on Occ Health for SOHSA a little while ago, her name is Dee Sultana of Direct Medicare, she can be contacted at DEE SULTANA [dee.sultana@btopenworld.com] She carries out Occ health screening for our company and I would recommend her.
I suggest you give her a call and ask her to come and quote for you.

Regards,

Tim.

Hi

I'm sure this has been resolved now, but just in case it isn't here goes... Health Surveilance is very much based on risk assessment. we carry out annual tests for hearing, lung function, skin checks and urine sampling - we do annual checks because of the transient nature of the workforce, it also helps us identify any potential problems earlier, often 3 years is too long.

With HAVS we do a 3 tier approach which is a questionnaire, followed by a meeting for anyone who shows possible symptoms and for those that display obvious or potential symptoms they are then referred to an occupational specialist. Supplementing this is training and guidance of how individuals can reduce exposure and protect themselves.

we use our health surveillance company (Sound Advice) for this, and also use them for return to work/absence issues both non and work related.

The cost is very reasonable about 40 per person per year, but it gives you piece of mind that your staff are healthy, that your controls are effective and could reduce the chance of any future compensation claims.
