Dear all,

I have been asked how one would go about obtaining a SWL Certificate for frames to carry sheet glass - does anyone have any further information about this?

Kind Regards,

Phil Marsh

Philip,

The frame manufacturer should be able to have the frames certified, however, my experience is that they are not designed as lifting equipment, but for storage and that they should be lifted by FLT or the equivalent. If they are to be lifted by crane then they must have a SWL designation. This will increase the cost of course. We have informed all customers who have our delivery stillages left at site that they must not be lifted by crane or similar device. Even if the storage frames are to be used internally the same ruling applies.

Hope this helps.

Tim.

Thank you Tim, this is greatly appreciated.

Speaking with the HSE, they have suggested a number of companies who can perform the testing and certification for such devices:

- Lifting Equipment and Engineering Association :: 01279 816504
- Safety Assessment Federation :: 0207 4030987
- Association of Loading and Elevating Equipment :: 01883 334494#

I hope this information may help others.

Kind Regards,

Phil Marsh
