Should employees be paid sick pay for an INCIDENT at work

Just to add to this

SHP June 2011

Sickness absence cost the UK 17 Billion last year, including 2.7Billion lost to non genuine illness. According to survey 190 million working days lost to absence last year.

To give a cynical (but not my perspective) an employer may think that as the employee will undoubtedly make civil claim, then let the insurance pay the missing wages. You can have the arguments you like about whether we all end up paying for it in the end, but the wages bill is a monthly tally for a manager and they just see head count at work and the bill. Let someone else pay and give me a break could well be the attitude taken.

I said it was a cynical response. Very often lost earning are the largest component of smaller claims and I have been in a position where we paid people their full entitlement. Sometimes they went on to claim, but quite often they didn't.
