Welcome to the Sheffield Occupational Health and Safety Association

Established in 1922, the Sheffield Occupational Health and Safety Association's mission is to "protect people's health and safety by ensuring risks in the changing workplace are properly controlled". We aim to support local companies and individuals in their quest for improved health and safety performance and thirst for relevant knowledge by providing occupational health & safety information, advice and guidance and promoting awareness.

Present group members include safety professionals in engineering sectors, construction, scientific laboratories and research, heavy industries (including steel and glass manufacture), hospitals and first-aid, local councils, theatre, education and training, retail, legal and office sectors, giving us access to occupational health and safety professionals in all industry sectors throughout the South Yorkshire region.

We hold bi-monthly member meetings throughout the year giving all members access to expert speakers on a variety of occupational health and safety topics relevant to their needs as health and safety professionals. Membership also gives full access to the association website - including a wealth of downloadable resources, support in the online discussion forum; access to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the South Yorkshire Fire Service, who sit on the executive committee as ex-officio members of the association for support on specific issues and consultation on upcoming legislation, as well as many additional benefits including collecting CPD points for career development. Cutting red tape for business: new guidance on basic health and safety

Health and safety made simple - the basics for your businessHealth and Safety law applies to all businesses, whatever the size. A new online resource, Health and Safety Made Simple, provides employers with straightforward step-by-step guidance on what they need to do to achieve a basic level of compliance.
Aimed particularly at low risk small and medium-sized enterprises, the guidance has been developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in consultation with business organisations.

Health and Safety Made Simple takes businesses through their basic health and safety duties, explaining what to do and how to do it by linking to helpful resources such as online risk assessment tools. It also signposts users to further information and advice where necessary. The new guidance illustrates that health and safety doesn’t have to be difficult and that in many lower risk workplaces it can be adequately managed in-house.

Health and Safety Made Simple was launched in March by Employment Minister Chris Grayling, as part of a package of changes designed to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and promote a proportionate approach to managing health and safety.
