Asbestos is a hidden killer and, contrary to popular belief, could be found in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000. The HSE Asbestos the Hidden Killer campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks of asbestos and reduce future exposure by informing all people of appropriate precautions, common locations and the correct way to handle asbestos containing materials - most of all to stop and check before commencing any works where asbestos may be situation.

Greenstreet Research Report (Reviewing the Targeted Initiatives - RR620)

A number of manufacturing sectors have been operating voluntary ‘targeted initiatives’ whereby a trade association, often with trade union involvement, sets health and safety targets and supports their achievement against a background of HSE prompting and involvement. This review of eleven initiatives found mixed outcomes, with five successful initiatives associated with significant reductions in injury rates and positive subjective feedback.

Four other initiatives were either too young or too small scale to provide clear results and the remaining two did not appear to have made progress. A HSE ‘policy model’ is provided to inform future engagement and support of targeted initiatives, along with suggestions on further development of good practice in respect of targeted initiatives.

The HSE's shattered lives campaign aims at reducing slips, trips and falls in the workplace. The hard hitting campaign involves raising awareness of the impact of slips, trips and falls in the workplace and provides practical advice and guidance.

The campaign is targeted at those sectors where there is a high number of slips, trips and falls accidents each year, specifically, health and social care, education, food manufacturing, food retail, catering and hospitality, building and plant maintenance, and construction.

On the new campaign website, people will be able to find out information on how they can easily, and cost effectively, reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls in the workplace, and see what other organisations, such as Sainsbury's and First Line Digital, have done. Included on the site is an online tool (STEP) and a work at height access equipment toolkit (WAIT). Advice ranges from how to deal with spills and other slip risks, to the importance of using ladders correctly to reduce the risk of falling from height.

Released by the Sentencing Guidelines Council, these guidelines set out principles to guide courts in dealing with companies and organisations that cause death through a gross breach of care or where breach of health and safety requirements are a significant cause of the death.

Health and Safety Made Simple takes businesses through their basic health and safety duties, explaining what to do and how to do it by linking to helpful resources such as online risk assessment tools. It also signposts users to further information and advice where necessary. The new guidance illustrates that health and safety doesn’t have to be difficult and that in many lower risk workplaces it can be adequately managed in-house.

This guidance explains the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998. It aims to help users learn about and understand the Regulations dealing with lifting equipment in everyday workplaces such as factories, offices, shops, hospitals, construction sites, warehouses, farms - wherever lifting equipment is used at work.
