Nicholas Russell

"In the field of health and safety for many years now sports and leisure are not really acknowledged as being industries in their own right and as such have generally been dealt with on a venue by venue basis by the numerous local authorities and other enforcement agencies. They generally do not know the nature of the sport or activity been carried out or staged, or have the professional skills and training to be able to help and advise in a constructive manner. Some listen and take on board what is explained in respect of the staging or running of any particular activity or event and respond in a constructive manner, and there are those who because they do not understand the business or industry hide behind legislation."

"The aim of the talk today is to give an insight into what is the biggest industry after banking in terms of revenue generation, and that’s just the sports side of it, and the additional legislation and guidance that venues and organisers have to comply with to ensure the safe and successful delivery of the event or operations. This together with how a raceday is delivered with a few funny anecdotes and interesting stories thrown in to keep everyone awake."

"There are over 3,000 Sport and Leisure facilities across the UK employing over 600,000 staff, with over 3 million users/attendees each week - generating over £30 billion revenue in 2011."
