Hi

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced sound level meter / data logger for calculating Leq. I picked up some information at the H&S Expo, but I don't have much experience with this kind of kit. I've two light manufacturing sites and 10 regional sites that need assessment, so it would seem cheaper to own equipment rather than renting or employing an external surveillance squad.

Jason, I can't say that I do. Been long time since I bought one. But you also have to take into account the cost of calibration. Maybe renting one when you need it might actually be a better idea. If you discover that you don't really have a noise problem then you've just wasted your money

I would also suggest having a proper survey done and then maybe get a meter to stay on top of things.

Just ideas.

You make some good points Chris. A proper survey will serve us better in the long run and save us a great deal of time and effort in understanding where our problem areas are. We may be fine, but just need the evidence to justify our levels of control.

Hi

I have a Cirrus meter that I use for taking spot readings. I would love to upgrade it though to an all singing and dancing machine.


3M have a small lapel device that you pin to your coat that vibrates and lights up when noise levels are too high. It's more of an indicator though. It might give you an idea if you have a problem or not. Unsure of the price though

You could talk to Alan from 3M. He is one of the speakers at the conference next month. I'll see if he'll bring one along to show you.

By the way did I mention the conference.

Thanks for the info on 3M. I looked a Cirrus and Caswell at the Safety Expo in July and their kit was good, but pretty pricey. I'm getting some quotes for monitoring / reporting, so may get away with a lower spec bit of kit when I eventually buy. Will be good to have a chat with the fellow from 3M at the conference, to which I have booked, paid for and am on my way. I'll see you all there.

I would say Cirrus and Casella are about the best on the market, but there are quite a few others these days. I'll pop mine in the car so I can show you at the conference if your interested.

If you are looking for a survey have you tried a couple of our members. Peak HSE, EEF and HS Direct should all carry out surveys. If your interested let me know and I'll send you some contacts.

Just another thought, is there an APP out there that might give you some basic readings, again just a thought. I'm not into these Smart phones, I rely on my son to assist - I'm getting old.
