Have you considered equipping your first aiders with a defib? the AED Automated External Defib is fully automatic and cannot shock a casualty if they do not need it. Easy to use and a real life saver.
Read the article in the April SHP, this may give you food for thought. CPR alone may save up to 18% of cardiac victims, if a AED is used within three minutes this figure reaches 74%. How long to get a paramedic on site? You may not be providing the duty of care expected.
Defibs are fast becoming the standard, after advocating them for years, things are starting to move. At least risk assess your workplace, consider the age of employees, any existing workers with heart conditions, and as always how many people including visitors We now include AED as part of our standard first aid training,and have recently supplied four local firms with defibs.
